The agentic layer is the new middleware

Enterprise platforms were sold as systems of record. Agents are what finally make them systems of action.

Every enterprise platform makes the same quiet bargain with its customers: we'll be the single source of truth, and in exchange, your people will do the truth's data entry.

That bargain is why CRM data is reliably stale, why adoption dashboards disappoint, and why “garbage in” is the oldest joke in the Salesforce ecosystem. The platform was never the problem. The labor model was.

The agentic layer changes the labor model, not the platform. An agent that enriches records, drafts the follow-up, triages the case queue, and chases its own data hygiene doesn't replace the system of record — it finally feeds it properly. The platform becomes more valuable, not less.

This is why we treat “AI strategy” engagements with suspicion when they start from the model and work backwards. The useful question isn't “where can we use AI?” It's: which workflows are humans subsidizing with manual labor that an agent should be doing inside the systems we already own?

Three places we consistently find the answer

  1. Record hygiene.Pipeline data decays the moment it's entered. Agents make freshness a property of the system instead of a quarterly cleanup project.
  2. The follow-up gap.The work between meetings — notes, drafts, next steps — is where deals quietly die. It's also the most automatable work in the building.
  3. Triage. Most queues are sorted by arrival time, not by consequence. An agent that reads, classifies, and routes turns response time into a choice rather than an accident.

None of this requires replacing anything. That's the point. The agentic layer is middleware — it sits between your people and your platforms, and it pays rent in data quality.

The companies that get this first won't look more automated from the outside. They'll just be faster, with cleaner numbers, and their teams will spend their hours on judgment instead of data entry.
